Nessebar – City Tour
The ancient town with a millennial history is situated on a romantic rocky peninsula connected to the land by a narrow isthmus. The peninsula is 850 meters long and 300 meters wide. Here you can find preserved valuable monuments dating back to all ages of its millennial existence: ancient fortress walls from the Roman epoch and the Middle Ages, Byzantium and Old Bulgarian churches, old-time houses from the XVIII and XIX century. The greatest treasure of the town is the multitude of churches: to the early Byzantium period belong the two nave basilicas - “St. Sofia” /the old holy metropolis/ - one of the most formidable buildings in Nessebar and Eleusa Basilica on the northern coast, dated back to V – VI century. The building has been demolished several times and then restored. It is also known under the name The Eleusa Virgin because of the icon of Virgin Mary discovered in it. To X – XI century may be referred the churches St. John the Baptist, distinct by its tall cylindrical dome and St. Stephen, that has treasured up frescos from XVI century having a high artistic value. The Nessebar type of churches reaches its peak with the emergence of the painting style expressed in a rich, multi-color design of the facades. This style is recognizable in the churches from XIII – XIVcentury: St. Todor, St. Paraskeva, St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the Church Jesus Christ the Pantocrator. It is a real jewel for Nessebar. The building is located in the center of the town and is more or less the most well-preserved of its type in Bulgaria. It is characterized by the large variety of architectural shapes and the abundance of harmoniously located horizontal and vertical color ornaments. St. John Aliturgeots /unconsecrated/ even nowadays is a priceless monument of Bulgarian culture. This church has never been consecrated and therefore, it has never been used as an ecclesiastical building .Nessebar is a historical treasure house of Bulgaria and in 1956 it is declared a “Museum Town – Archeological and Architectural Reserve”. By reason of its unpaired historical local color in 1983 the town is included on the list of the World Cultural Heritage.
Nowadays the old quarter of the town is an attractive place for romantic walks along narrow cobble-stoned lanes amidst small shops offering hand-made souvenirs – dishes, knitting works, jewelry. Against the background of the splendid antique environment, you have a unique vacation opportunity. The administrative activity is concentrated in the new quarter of Nessebar. The appearance of this part of the town is characterized by a modern building style.
